Longevity & AgingGene Therapy Could Make Type 2 Diabetes a One-Time Fix Beyond GLP-1 Drugs
Fractyl Health has received authorization to begin the first human trial of RJVA-001, an AAV-based gene therapy for Type 2 diabetes. Unlike GLP-1 drugs that require ongoing injections, this therapy is delivered once via an endoscopic procedure directly into the pancreas, prompting the organ to produce GLP-1 naturally in response to meals. The goal is to shift diabetes care from lifelong management to a potential one-time biological fix. Researchers see poor glucose regulation as an accelerator of biological aging, making this advance highly relevant to longevity. The Phase 1/2 trial enrolling adults aged 35 and up will begin in the Netherlands. While early and unproven, the approach represents a meaningful step toward disease modification rather than indefinite disease management.
